Most common causes of this anemia in infants are iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and thalassemia.
Iron deficiency anemia and thalassemia are characterized by decreased hemoglobin production because of insufficient availability of heme or globin, respectively and both diseases cause hypochromic microcytic anemia.
If it is not treated, this can lead to a disorder called iron deficiency anemia.
